Julia Gillard Makes you Fat

According to the last Fitness Australia report (April 2012) the average ‘Fitness Professional’ (A phrase coined by a popular skills training company to label a personal trainer) will survive twelve months in the industry, if the PT is highly skilled they will make it to four years and if they survive the four year curse (like myself) they will make a career out of it.

According to Fit Aus, the vast majority of PTs leave the industry citing two key points; irregular hours and lack of job security. Just to give you the quick 101, the vast majority of gyms and fitness facilities do not hire PT’s in the traditional sense of the word, PTs are required to pay a ‘lease’ to the facility and then build their own client base. This also includes acquiring professional indemnity insurance. Essentially; this relieves the facility of both liability should something go wrong (very possible given the current 12 week training courses) and the financial risk of hiring and firing staff. However, the inverse is true to the PT, who must accept a complete lack of job security and an incredible amount of liability for one that is relatively unskilled and uneducated.
Before you tune out and move on the next article I would like to raise my concerns about industrial relations and the fitness industry. You might have heard of this stupid thing coming up called ‘the election’. Ok to be fair, we are very privileged to have the rights to vote in this country so maybe I shouldn’t be too condescending.
Julia Gillard announced a few weeks back that she plans to; enshrine penalty rates in law, meeting a key pre-election demand of her union support base. This policy obviously covers issues of shift work loading and overtime rates. Now this is obviously a body shot for small business in any industry trying to operate in super-tough economic conditions that will be forced to place more employees on subcontract or freelance agreements.  But more-so this union lead policy will be the clean right headshot to the fitness industry.
A Ranga with Glasses, Just like Gillard
As such; If you ask any small business operator what a politician can do to help their business, they will almost certainly say ‘leave us alone’ the notion that Labor want to increase the risk to employers is only going drive the fitness industry in to a deeper, darker hole. In order for the fitness industry to move back to a traditional model of employment, employers must be free to negotiate the terms of employment that best suit their business. This will obviously include rates of pay and terms of employment

Under Labors latest plans the fitness industry is robbed of any chance it has of fighting back to the moral high ground. As such; the number of inexperienced, unsupervised and uneducated personal trainers is going to continue to spiral out of control.

Doing Crossfit makes you 13% better at doing Crossfit - Science Fact!

No shit, it has been a long time since I updated this site, I think my excuse is the same as last time, Uni.....But here is the good news; after three years of Bulgarian style repression (6 hours of Uni, 6 days a week), constantly taunting me with the lure of employment (Western equivalent to free speech) I have now completed my Degree and by the time all you suckers read this I will officially hold a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science!
Recently Crossfit HQ posted a quote from Gregg ‘Coach’ Glassman

I know the subject of Crossfit is getting pretty old, but stick with me, I am going somewhere here. Apparently this quote was taken out of context, but the problem is; CROSSFIT HQ POSTED THE QUOTE. What next? Juliar Gillard stating she was taken out of context when she stated “There will be no carbon tax”
Now here is where shit starts to get interesting: The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research recently published an article where 23 males and 20 females “Spanning all levels of aerobic fitness” partook in what they are calling “High Intensity Power Training” (not High Intensity INTERVAL training, that would just be a waste of everyone’s time).
So these 23 men and 20 women were sent off to their local Crossfit box and put through their paces for 10 weeks and then sent back to the researcher for assessment.
The findings were astonishing; a 13 and 11% increase in V02 and significant improvements in their body composition.
Ok you all know me; I don’t use words like ‘astonishing’ unless I am being a sarcastic fucker. This study is total bullshit and you don’t need Honours in research methodology to understand why.
The researcher has not declared the backgrounds of the 43 test subjects, where did he find them? What were their training backgrounds? Were they elite SAS soldiers or were they from the local obesity anonymous meeting?
Next is perhaps the biggest flaw in this piece of shit; what was the control group doing during this 10 week training period? Of fuck, the researcher did not include a control, so the results from the test (crossfit) group are only being compared against themselves. I think it’s fair to say when you find a bunch of total randoms and chuck them in any guided exercise program their key performance indicators will improve.
So now comes the really fun part; we get to sit back and watch the thousands of Crossfit lovers and haters go to war over what is a fundamentally flawed study, meanwhile; I am off to my local Squat rack.
Feels good to be back and free from Uni, if there is a subject you are interested in shoot me a message on Facestalk and ill see what I can pull out my ass
